Introduction:

“Square your hips, engage your core, stack your bones.” Do these instructions sound familiar? Let me ask you in a more straightforward way, do these cues resonate with you? Don’t worry, I didn’t get them either. It’s fascinating how I’ve attended yoga classes across different continents and still hear the same generic cues from teachers of various backgrounds. What’s even more surprising is that most classes seem to operate on autopilot. I vividly remember a particular class where half the students were struggling, but the teacher carried on without pausing to offer guidance. That’s when it hit me: while these teachers were skilled yogis, they weren’t great at teaching.

The Journey:

This phenomenon didn’t come as a shock to me. As a former high school math teacher, I witnessed a similar pattern daily. Frustrated teachers would sigh, “It’s not that hard, it’s not rocket science!” But for the students, it felt like rocket science. The teachers had forgotten the time and effort it took them to gain their knowledge.

My first taste of yoga came in Phuket, where I practiced with a Brazilian teacher who was both empathetic and precise with his cues. I left his class feeling physically invigorated and mentally at peace. I was hooked! However, when he eventually left the country, I embarked on a journey through various yoga studios, encountering teachers from diverse backgrounds and styles. Sadly, most of them, despite their best intentions, fell short as effective guides. While I admired their impressive Asanas showcased on Instagram, their cues and adjustments didn’t set me up for success. Some days, I struggled to gauge my progress, as if the teacher in front of me didn’t truly see me.

The Turning Point:

Eventually, I decided to practice yoga at home. My love for yoga remained intact, but my motivation to attend studios waned. Paying for a mediocre experience didn’t align with my passion. During the COVID era, I turned to online platforms like AloMoves and YouTube for guidance. If you’ve found yourself nodding along with my experiences so far, I invite you to try my class for a refreshing change.

My Yoga:

As a yoga teacher, I’ve made it my mission to break away from the automatic mode that many classes seem to operate on. I prioritize creating small and intimate class settings where each student feels seen and supported. I take the time to explain cues, adapt them to your understanding, and ensure your comfort throughout the practice. It’s not just about going through the motions; it’s about empowering you to find your own path and experience progress that is both tangible and meaningful.
